Poe’s parents are a traveling playwright. He was born in Boston on January 19, 1809. He was orphaned when he was 3 years old, and was adopted by a businessman named John Allan, so he later interlaced Allan in the middle of his name.
At the age of 17, Poe enrolled at Virginia University, but the unruly young man gambled and drank, so his frustrated adoptive father summoned him home. Only a few months later, Poe ran away from home.
Even at such a young age, Poe proved to have a genius in literature, but no royalties were enough to support him, so he was forced to register for military service, then promoted to the position sergeant. After he was accepted into the West Point martial arts school, but soon, because he could not stand the strict discipline there, he violated the rules regularly and was deported after 8 months of studying there.
From then on, Poe insisted on making a living with a pen. By 1835, he married his cousin Virginia. Poe’s poems, short stories, and reviews began to gain attention. He was so engrossed in writing, and his wife, for loving him, that whenever he stayed up late writing under a dim light, she sat adoringly with her husband – perhaps to inspire her husband. Surprisingly, she soon contracted tuberculosis, and died on January 30, 1847.
The death of his beloved wife made Poe extremely painful for a while, and then he stabbed too much to relieve sorrow, trying to find pleasure to forget the pain. By 1849, he was engaged to his childhood sweetheart, when he was a wealthy widow, then suddenly the writer was kidnapped and poisoned by the group. When he was found, he was found to be completely unconscious and four days later, he passed away on October 7, 1849, enjoying just four weeks of life.
The six short stories in this book are considered to be the best by Edgar Poe.
