“Scary Stories t Tell in the Dark PDF” evokes fear when teenagers see the deaths of friends or themselves but do not know how to prevent death.
Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark is set in 1968 in a small town of Mill Valley (USA). On the outskirts of this place is the abandoned mansion of the Bellows family – associated with the story of the death of young girl Sarah Bellows. There are rumors that Sarah told scary stories from a book, leading to the deaths of children in town.
On Halloween night, a group of teenagers come to the mansion and see strange phenomena. Curious about scary stories, little Stella (Zoe Margaret Colletti) brings Sarah’s book home. Stella and her friends discover new stories that automatically appear in the book, telling them about their own chase. The group must find a way to save themselves, and discover the secrets behind the status of Sarah Bellows.
Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark PDF is adapted from the horror series by Alvin Schwartz and artist Stephen Gammell. The series is a collection of short, mostly horror stories. It consists of three parts: Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark (1981), More Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark (1984) and Scary Stories 3: More Tales to Chill Your Bones (1991).
The team chose typical short stories to build into each situation. The four short stories used in the movie are Harold, The Big Toe, The Red Spot, and The Dream. Also, the filmmakers who created another story, not in the book version are Jangly Man. Each part targets a specific victim – being chased by hideous villains or haunting phenomena.
With scenes based on the book version, the director closely follows the specific characteristics of the story – be it the shaping, the motive or the killing of the villain. The work creates fear from many images such as puppets, corpses, parasitic spiders to strange women.
Filmmakers build sequences based on separate short parts. They are linked by sequentially appearing in the book of Sarah Bellows. The variety of materials makes the film more attractive and unpredictable. Every time new lines surfaced in Sarah’s book, viewers were nervous about who would be the next victim and what to face.
Guillermo del Toro – who won two Oscars (“Best Film” and “Best Director” with The Shape of Water (Vietnamese name: The monster girl, 2018) – is a producer and script development The Mexican filmmaker’s mark was created in the making of monsters, the evil entity group in Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark has features like scarecrow-like corpses chiseled or a woman with an oversized, white face and a weird smile.
Initially, Guillermo del Toro was targeted for directing, but André Øvredal then took over the project. Øvredal has made a mark in horror films, with low-budget and critically acclaimed works like Trollhunter and The Autopsy of Jane Doe. Norwegian filmmakers are quite sure of the jump scare tactics (situations where images and sounds suddenly appear). In addition, Øvredal knows how to create tension through cutting in scenes of victims hiding, as excerpts in the field. In the bed in the room, despite the simple context, the director knows how to use flexible angles and cut scenes to surprise the happenings.
In addition, Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark contains social messages. Throughout the film, the American War waged in Vietnam was mentioned many times as an unjust war, sending many young Americans to their deaths. A character who escapes military service is scorned by US authorities but is the “hero” of the story, both moral and courage. Filmmakers also use some tribute to the classic horror works – typically the film Night of the Living Dead (1968) shown in the scenes of the characters watching movies outdoors.
The actors in the film are mostly new faces. Young actors like Zoe Margaret Colletti and Michael Garza have only been involved in one or two previous film projects. They act in full roles, expressing their horror when confronted with evil forces. In addition, Austin Zajur made much laughter when taking on the role of the “comedy tree” of the film.
Despite the bright spots, the film still has many serious situations, such as finding a book or a recording of Sarah Bellows. The film is also relatively simple, not clarifying the relationship between Sarah and other monsters. With the PG-13 label (not suitable for people under 13) in the US, the film does not have intense action scenes for fans of the heavy horror film series. On Rotten Tomatoes, 80% of critics positively rated the work.
