Margaret Atwood’s latest novel, Oryx y Crake is a terrifying masterpiece. Atwood illustrates the ultimate apocalyptic disaster when the novel’s main antagonist, water cock, uses both of his scientific geniuses in combination with his apparent moral corruption to try to quell, and later that re-creates, the whole humanity. Conversely, the voice of Jimmy / Snowman, the main character of the story, gradually reveals a world of isolation for those who possess either artistic appreciation or compassion. The paintings of the future are a markedly bleak, expressed through extremes such as the classroom division’s “future broad acceptance of social settlement through communities, repetitive layoffs”. with humanitarian concern over genetic engineering, and blatant disregard for ethics.
