Lord of the Rings book 1 – The Fellowship of The Ring was written during the period of the author teaching in Oxford, from 1937 to 1949; but the first sketches of Arda began in 1917 when he was recovering during the fighting in France. In the morning from the Music of the Ainurs, the great exodus of the Elves, the love story between Beren and Lúthien, the cosmic battle between the Valar and the Elves with Morgoth that Sauron is just a student, all both formed long before he first thought of resembling Hobbits. And the story of the Battle of the Rings becomes a natural sequel, the Third Period, following the golden ages. Tolkien wanted to create an epic similar to Beowulf or Kalevala, but what he did was probably even wider.
One of the main attractions of the Lord of the Rings is not in the pages of the book: but in the existence of the story as a puzzle piece made up of “legendarium” (Tolkien’s word). back to Middle-earth; in other words, in the existence of Middle-earth as a continent within Arda (this world), it was in turn in Eä (universe).
