Kamikaze is the tenth solo album by American rapper Eminem. It was released unannounced on August 31, 2018 for download and streaming via the labels Shady Records, Aftermath Entertainment and Interscope Records. A week later it was also released on CD.
Unlike all of Eminem’s other albums, Kamikaze released without notice and only eight months after his last studio album Revival, which was released in December 2017. The day before the release, the rapper posted only a 15-second excerpt of the song Venom, which belongs to the soundtrack of the eponymous film, on the Internet. The album itself promoted Eminem on the day of publication on the social networks.
On Kamikaze attacks Eminem especially his critics, as his last studio album Revival was received by many media and fans negative. He also takes a critical look at modern hip-hop and its artists (eg The Ringer, Not Alike, Fall ). The title Kamikaze alludes to Eminem risking his reputation and career as a suicide bomber with the album.
In the very first song The Ringer, which consists of a single verse, brings Eminem for sweeping blow against representatives of modern Mumble Rap ( Engl. To mumble “mumble” “mumble”) from, including Lil pump, Lil Xan, Iggy Azalea, Lil Yachty, Machine Gun Kelly and 21 Savage. He could not do anything with their music, which revolves around luxury and women. However, due to his greater notoriety, only they would benefit from a dispute with him. Eminem makes fun of these rappers by imitating their rap style and says they all become Lil Waynecopy. On the other hand, he speaks positively about Joyner Lucas, Kendrick Lamar, J. Cole and Big Sean. He turns to the people who criticized his latest album, Revival, and thinks they would have welcomed it, had he also used auto-tune and his lyrics were not so demanding. In addition, Eminem criticized fans who would repeatedly measure him on his album The Marshall Mathers LP. Most recently, he shoots again at US President Donald Trump, who was afraid to answer him publicly and instead sent the Secret Service over for his lyrics.
Subsequently, Eminem called into Greatest to ironically as the greatest rapper of all time, and he makes fun of other artists who boast of their sales, although this approach ranged nowhere near his. He dissed besides, also the South African rap duo Die Antwoord, which according Revival had made fun of him. In Lucky You, Eminem and Joyner Lucas rap each other from their perspective about their opposing careers. While Joyner quarrels with Lucas, he probably never gets a Grammy despite his best effortsEminem says that although he won many prizes, he sold his soul and now has a lot to lose. On the other hand, Normal Eminems always deals with difficulties and suspicions about his ex-wife Kim and about women in general. He wonders why they can not be “normal” and whether it is ultimately up to him. Stepping Stone is an emotional review of the career of Eminem’s rap group D12 : He apologizes to the remaining members, whom he has never wanted to use as a “springboard” for his own career. However, the death of proof2006, which always kept the group together, was synonymous with the end of D12, which he now officially announces.
On Not Alike, Eminem and Royce da 5’9 ” again attack the modern rap scene and show how little they have in common with this. They make fun of the new generation of rappers by imitating their rap style (eg from Migos ) and content. In particular, Eminem mentions Machine Gun Kelly again, which led him to his Disrack Rap Devil against Eminem. The title song Kamikaze deals with the bad reviews that got the previous album Revival. Eminem compares this ironically with his song Fack from the best-of album Curtain Call: The Hitsfrom the year 2005, which was also strongly criticized. Like a kamikaze pilot, he now leans on his critics. In case Eminem in the role of his alter ego Slim Shady his campaign against the critics and other rappers continues: This time he attacks, inter alia, Tyler, the Creator and Joe Budden. On the other hand, Hopsin, Logic and again J. Cole are mentioned positively. Justin Vernon, who is heard in the chorus of the song, expressed his displeasure over the song.
The pieces Nice Guy and Good Guy once again deal with Eminem’s split relationship with the female sex, with singer Jessie Reyez playing the role of Eminem’s partner. In Nice Guy both express their mutual suspicion and insult themselves, which eventually leads to a violent confrontation in Good Guy. In doing so, he accuses her of going astray, to which she does not return anything, because she wants him to believe that he is the good in the relationship. The last song Venom was recorded for the soundtrack to the film of the same name. Eminem mainly uses puns, comparisons and metaphorsin which he takes on the role of the main character of the film, which infests his victims like a parasite.

Dr. Dre and Eminem acted as executive producers with Kamikaze, producing songs from 14 different music producers. Most instrumentals come from Illadaproducer that the songs The Ringer (along with Eminem (Co) and Ronny J), Lucky You (with Boi-1da and Jahaan Sweet), Normal (S1, Lonestarrmuzik and Swish Allnet) and Good Guy produced, Mike Will Made It contributed the music to Greatest (starring Jeremy Miller) and Fall, while Tim Suby produced the title song Kamikaze. Julian Dörr of the Süddeutsche Zeitung calls Kamikaze a “pretty good rap record”, which is “very entertaining”. Eminem recorded the album “for perhaps the best reason a musician could ever do, because people found their former bad.” “With its rhythmic bandwidth and flexibility,” rappe Eminem “still has its own league.”
The star ‘s online presence sees Eminem’s album as “a reckoning with all who opposed him.. Somehow cool “After the worse last release is now” the old Eminem “back -” and indeed with a raised middle finger “.
Dennis Pohl writes on Spiegel Online that Kamikaze is “Eminem’s best album since The Eminem Show (2002)” and “a set tantrum without net and double bottom, free and uncensored”. However, “even a record in the new best of 2018 can no longer hide the fact that an old iron raps here.”
