In the history of Tokyo Ghoul
is about the student Ken Kaneki, who falls in love with a young woman named Liz. After a meeting with her, she bites him in a back alley in the shoulder and reveals that she is a “ghoul” (ghouls are creatures that are similar in appearance to humans, but can only feed on human flesh). When Liz was about to eat Ken, several large metal bars fell from the construction site of a skyscraper down on them. Liz dies while doing so. Ken is hospitalized with life-threatening injuries. After recovering, he is released from the hospital. On the day of his release, he finds out that he is no longer a human being. He looks in the mirror and a shiver runs down his spine, since he now has a ghoul eye (ghouls actually have two ghoul eyes, but Ken has only one). He realizes that Liz’s organs were transplanted to him at the hospital. Since he now owns Liz’s organs, he is a so-called and very rare “half ghoul”. Since he can not turn to anyone else, he is received by a group of ghouls, the “Café Antik” (Original:Anteiku
) lead. They teach him how to master his new life as a half-ghoul, and tell him a lot about ghoul society, its factions, and its need to keep its identity secret from other people.
Although he refuses to consume human flesh, in some situations he is forced to do so. At the end of the first season, he is kidnapped and tortured by a group of extremist ghouls until he recognizes his ghoul nature, gets white hair and black nails and nearly kills his tormentor and then devours him. He is now more brutal to protect those who mean something to him.
Prehistory Tokyo Ghoul: JACK
is about the youth of Kishou Arima and Taishi Fura, two characters from the main series who team up to investigate the death of a friend of Taishi. He died at the hands of a notorious ghoul named “Lantern” and Taishi follows Arima and ultimately joins the CCG (Commission of Counter Ghoul); the federal agency, which looks after crimes related to ghouls.
In the successor Tokyo Ghoul:
it is about Kaneki, who suffers from memory loss. With his new identity as Haise Sasaki, he is the leader of a special CCG team called “Quinx Squad”, all operated by the CCG and now called Halbghule, called Quinx. Although they have claws, they do not have to eat human flesh and can lead a human life.
Ken Kaneki is a shy youth who does not cope with his half-ghoul existence. Nevertheless, he is a strong ghoul who can heal quickly and defeat investigators even faster. After being tortured by Yakumo Ōmori, he becomes more brutal and stronger so as not to kill anyone. As a ghoul, he has two pseudonyms from the CCG: “Eye Patch”, because of his mask, and “Centipede,” because of his kakuja claw. He loves books and would like to meet his favorite author Sen Takatsuki. In normal life, he wears an eye patch because he can not control his ghoul eye. He has black hair, but gets Jason white hair and black toe and fingernails through the traumas of torture, and he is also muscular. Later Kaneki leaves the “Antik” to join the group “Phoenix Tree”.
As a shark Sasaki, he is a bit different. He is now ghoul investigator, but he thinks that ghouls should not be killed for no reason. He is no longer shy, but more open. His standard clothing consists of a black shirt with a white tie and a long coat. Unlike Ken, he detests his ghoul side and only fights with his claw in absolute emergencies. Usually he uses his quinque. He is a very caring mentor, but his charges are always running away because he does not have a lot of assertiveness.
Toka is a very impulsive ghula. She is quick-tempered and unfriendly and often scolds Ken. Nevertheless, she builds a bond with him and is appalled by his transformation. She has a pony covering her right eye. She has a younger brother named Ayato, who hates her, and her parents were identified as ghoul by humans and killed. The CCG calls her “hare” because of her mask, after she kills detective Mado as an act of revenge. She lives with Hinami in her apartment and tries to take care of her as well as possible.
Hideyoshi, called Hide, is a human and Kaneki’s best friend. Hide is a funny and very showy person quite unlike Kaneki Ken. Hide has orange blonde hair that is short at the beginning of the story and relatively long at the end. Kaneki broke the friendship after his “transformation” by distance, because he was afraid to drag Hide into the Ghoulworld. He has told Hideyoshi nothing about this transformation. Hide, however, knew right from the start that his best friend Kaneki had turned into a half-ghoul. Throughout history, Hide informs the CCG and is assistant to Kotaro Amon and Akira Mado. There he also meets Seido Takizawa, whom he makes friends with. At the end of Tokyo Ghoul Hide is reported missing.
Yoshimura is a ghoul and the owner of the cafe called “Antik”. The CCG calls him “The Owl”. He is the one who introduces Kaneki to the world of ghouls. They quickly build a good relationship, but Yoshimura is nearly killed by the CCG at the end of Season 2 of the anime. He is devoured by another ghoul and thus saved.
Yakumo is a ghoul who used to be tortured by a crazy ghoul investigator by cutting off his toes and fingers. He was able to escape and now applies the methods by which he was tortured to others. He is known for his characteristic finger-clicking, which Ken inherited from him after he ate it. He is also called “gecko” or “Jason”.
Hinami is a young innocent girl. Her parents were killed by CCG investigators. Since then she lives at Toka. Tōka is like a sister to Hinami and Ken to her like a brother. She has a dandruff and feather claw.
Uta is the operator of the “HySy ArtMask Studio”, in which he has made the mask of almost all the main characters. Uta is an old friend of Renji Yomo and Itori. Ken was a bit scared of him at the beginning. When Ken was kidnapped and tortured by Jason, Uta came to rescue him. Uta’s mask represents a voodoo face and his ghoul name is “No Face”. In the beginning he seems funny to everyone, but basically he is a nice guy. His claw is unknown.
Is a young man who was abused as a child by a ghula called “Big Madam”. He always had to kill people in front of an audience in the “Restaurant of the Ghule” as a “butcher”. Big Madam kept him as a housemaid and sent him into his cell after every fight and gave him a certain score. To numb him in pain, she mutilated his genitals, so that later no gender can be assigned. This mistreatment makes him a sociopath who does not understand the feelings of others. However, his abilities remained as a “butcher” so that he could work as an investigator with Shinohara, a CCG veteran.
Kureo is a middle-aged man who works as a CCG investigator. He is the father of Akira Mado, as well as partner and mentor of CCG investigator Kōtarō Amon. About ten years before the main story began, his wife Kasuka was killed by the “one-eyed owl”. As a result of this event, his hatred of the ghouls was strengthened and he became increasingly sadistic towards them. His biggest goal was to find the “one-eyed owl” and avenge his wife. During the first season, he is killed by Hinami Fueguchi and Tōka Kirishima.
