Amusing Ourselves to Death – At each stage of American history, different cities were central to the spirit of the country, respectively. At the end of the eighteenth century, Boston was the center for political radicalism. In the middle of the nineteenth century it was New York, a symbol of a united United States of cultures. Chicago brings the image of a strong and energetic America in the early twentieth century. Today, we have to look at Las Vegas or Nevada as a metaphor for the nation’s character and aspirations. Las Vegas represents the spirit of a culture, where every public debate is takes place in the form of “entertainment”. Politics, religion, news, sports, education and commerce all became the tentacles of the Entertainment octopus.
